Injured Worker on a telehealth call with a CorVel nurse

A vital piece of the heart of CorVel Corporation is our nurses. Our nurses are committed professionals who act as true advocates for improving the health and well-being of injured workers. Their goal is to provide care that improves the lives of all they touch.

With the arrival of the COVID-19 pandemic, our nurse case managers are working tirelessly to ensure the safety, recovery and continued progress toward return to work for our injured workers. Our proactive medical model offers nursing intervention through Advocacy 24/7, virtual care, and case management services.

We have the tools, the services, and the clinical expertise to assist your claim teams!

During this unprecedented time, our nurse case managers are acting in an advance practice role, leveraging technology to keep injured workers safe. To best support recovery throughout the COVID-19 outbreak, we have implemented additional virtual tools and resources for our case managers to support injured workers. These include:

Wellness Checks

Our nurses understand the stress created by the pandemic and can provide frequent wellness checks to mitigate anxiety and ensure precautionary measures are followed to prevent COVID-19 exposure. Our case managers assist injured workers to continue with rehabilitation and care focused on return to work. They utilize only credible sources, such as the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Center for Disease Control (CDC) websites, and are in constant communication with their injured workers to provide updates on public health practices and facility policies.

Virtual Care

In this period of social distancing, our nurses are prepared to offer and facilitate virtual care to ensure the recovery process is uninterrupted. We utilize video calls to complete clinical assessments as allowed by federal/state law. This technology allows CorVel nurses to connect with their injured workers and provide the reassurance of frequent face-to-face connection.

Case managers remain in close contact with treating physicians to ensure the injured worker’s recovery continues on a positive trajectory. If visits are not possible and the physician is not able to meet with the injured worker virtually, we offer telemedicine visits with occupational medicine physicians for particular diagnoses to immediately meet patient needs. Our telephonic and video support are compliant with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services guidelines and HIPAA requirements.

Surgical Preparedness

Elective surgical procedures are being delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. For patients awaiting surgery, our nurses facilitate pre-surgical conditioning and post-surgery care planning. CorVel case managers can design action plans that include flexibility exercises, nutrition counseling, pain/anxiety management counseling and guidance to ensure recovery continues despite procedure delays. This reduces the total cost of care and duration of disability.

Physical and Cognitive Therapy

CorVel case managers are ensuring brick-and-mortar provider office closures do not impede injured workers from receiving needed therapies to continue to recover from work injuries. Case managers are facilitating the transfer of care to virtual physical therapy (TelePT) and virtual cognitive therapy (TeleCBT) when needed to ensure progress continues.

Prescriptions

Home delivery of prescriptions are available through Rite Aid, CVS, and Walgreens. CorVel’s mail order service is also available via our pharmacy benefit management program. Case managers coordinate solutions with our certified pharmacy technicians to ensure all medications are appropriate and safe for the compensable injury.

Return to Work

Our case managers understand that some employers will be profoundly affected by the COVID-19 crisis. Corvel offers transitional work programs that can fill the gap for workers during these unprecedented times. Case managers proactively develop action plans to keep injured workers productive at any restriction level.

We are here to support you!

In the coming days, case management is going to become even more critical to assist injured/sick people with navigation through our health care process and to promote recovery and good health. All CorVel nurses are committed to serve our injured workers, their families and communities during this global health crisis. They are essential members of the injured worker’s clinical team and are committed to creative solutions to restore health and spirit.
