- April 13, 2020 – The state announced it is partnering with a Sioux Falls-based health-care company to run the first statewide clinical trial of the anti-malarial drug hydroxychloroquine, which President Trump has touted as a potential cure for covid-19, the illness caused by the coronavirus.
- April 10, 2020 – The Governor announced the launch of the Care 19 app, which will enable South Dakotans to track their movements and assist the Department of Health’s contact tracing efforts.

1/25/2022 At the January 21 hearing, this measure passed the Senate Health and Human Resources Committee by a unanimous vote. This measure then passed the Senate by a unanimous vote. This measure is eligible for further consideration in the House chamber.
South Dakota Regulatory Updates 4/2/2021
HB 1242 – Impose Certain Duties on Providers of Services Under a Case Management Plan of a Workers’ Compensation Insurance Policy and Provide a Penalty For a Violation Thereof.
Issues: Workers’ Compensation (Managed Care), Workers’ Compensation (General)
Summary: This measure creates South Dakota code to prohibit a health provider rendering services for a workers’ compensation claim from communicating with the policy issuer or employer without also communicating with the employee. This measure provides that a person who provides medical services or health care to an employee under a case management plan may not misrepresent their identity, credentials, or duties. This measure authorizes the secretary of the Department of Labor and Regulation to suspend, revoke, or not renew the certification of a case management plan if any person who provides medical services or health care to an employee violates this measure. A person who violates this measure will be guilty of a Class 2 misdemeanor and subject to an administrative fine of $100, payable to the department. This measure does not outline any rulemaking or enforcement mechanisms. This measure will take effect on July 1, 2021.

3/29/2021 This measure failed upon the adjournment of the Legislature on March 29. This measure will not carry over to the 2022 Legislative Session. This measure would need to be reintroduced to receive reconsideration.
The South Dakota SDCL 58-20-24 (effective October 1, 1993) mandates that all workers’ compensation insurers participate in a Managed Care Plan and must include case management and utilization review services.
