53% Reduction in PT Visits
Winn-Dixie has had a long partnership with CorVel that started with bill review and case management services in 2009. Since that time, the company added pharmacy solutions in 2011 and physical therapy services in July 2012. Winn-Dixie chose CorVel’s program because of coverage, scheduling convenience and lower average cost per visit.
From past experience, Winn-Dixie knew that the key to introducing any new program would be training. CorVel’s implementation team worked closely with all associates to ensure a smooth transition. Winn-Dixie’s implementation started with mandatory kick-off training for all claims adjusters and nurses. “It gave the opportunity to get everyone on board from the beginning,” said Barbara Turner, Winn-Dixie Workers’ Compensation Manager. She further added that program adoption has been good and working with one partner for physical therapy has simplified the process for making referrals for care.
Winn Dixie has seen many benefits with CorVel’s physical therapy services. Due to a proprietary network, new providers can be easily credentialed for added convenience and flexibility for injured workers. Additionally, because all services are provided by CorVel, physical therapy notes are immediately visible in CareMC to provide instant case management collaboration.

After six months in the physical therapy program, Winn-Dixie is very pleased with the results, and employees are happy as well because the average driving distance to a provider is just a little over six miles. Also, because of CorVel’s integrated approach to physical therapy and utilization review, the average number of visits has decreased by 53%. These reductions have made a great addition to the savings and benefits of their bill review, case management and pharmacy solutions already provided by CorVel.
